How to Seek God So You Will Know What to Do...
“Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.”
Proverbs 4:7 NLT
Get wisdom; develop good judgment. Sounds simple. Then why do we find it so hard to make decisions?
First, what is wisdom?
Search for images of “wisdom” on the internet. You’ll likely get images of books and owls! But book knowledge is not the same thing as wisdom. The world thinks that wisdom is something you purchase with tuition and class fees, rather than being a daily, lifelong process of growth. The kind of wisdom that God wants us to ask for us the kind that helps us discern His voice daily so that we can receive His guidance, walk in His will for our lives, and have peace. This kind of spiritual wisdom is a gift of the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 11:2-3).
Getting wisdom is important because it is the spiritual knowledge by which we gain true and lasting happiness. Proverbs 3:13 says, "Happy is the man who finds wisdom and the man who gets understanding." Proverbs 24:13–14 says, "My son, eat honey, for it is good, and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste. Know that wisdom is such to your soul; if you find it, there will be a future, and your hope will not be cut off."
Gaining wisdom provides hope! The hope we receive from God is the hope that does not fail us.
“And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us” (Romans 5:5).
Wisdom is the key to lasting happiness. Proverbs 19:8 says, "He who gets wisdom loves himself." In other words, do something good for yourself: Get wisdom! In Proverbs 8:32–36 “wisdom” is speaking and she says, "And now, my sons, listen to me: happy are those who keep my ways . . . Happy is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. For he who finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord; but he who misses me injures himself; all who hate me love death." Gaining wisdom and insight is a true gift that will encourage and strengthen us to live in a world that does not seek God. Proverbs 16:16 says, "To get wisdom is better than gold; to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver." It is a matter of life and death. The ultimate, eternal happiness that all people long for will only be found by those who first "get wisdom" from God.
How do we get wisdom? Simply ask for it!
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5).
Next, what is judgement?
Judgement is a close relative of wisdom. If wisdom is the spiritual knowledge we need to obtain life, happiness, hope, and peace, then judgement is the discernment of knowing how and when to apply God’s wisdom in our lives. Judgement helps us make spiritually healthy and positive choices in life that lead us to God's will.
How do we develop good judgement?
Anything that needs to be developed requires exercise, practice, and repetition. If we want to develop muscles, we must exercise, lift weights, eat right and be consistent. Developing judgement requires the ability to learn from our mistakes, have patience with ourselves and others, seek God’s guidance before making decisions, and seeking wisdom! If you want to develop good judgement, spend time each day talking with God in prayer, reading His Word, and asking for wisdom as you consider the choices you have to make in life. Often times when we wait on God’s answer to a choice we need to make we will see God open the way to a resolution or show us the next step to take. Having patience is key! How many times do we rush head to make a decision, and then ask God to bless it?
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
"But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, “First seek the counsel of the Lord”" (1 Kings 22:5).
God’s wisdom is well beyond the knowledge of man. When we are in a place of needing direction and insight for life’s problems, we can seek after God’s counsel to receive wisdom and understanding for our next steps. He knows the beginning and end; therefore, we can’t go wrong with His guidance. We can write out the pros and cons. We can try to weigh out every option in our minds. We can talk about our situation to death. However, we all have to come to a time of trusting and believing in God to lead us in the right decision as we seek His voice and wait patiently for the next step. When we put all our trust in Him, He gives us the direction we need to move in. His faithfulness will come through for us as we press forward in faith, in spite of the odds often being stacked against us! Making a decision with God’s wisdom will often look different than what the world expects us to do.
Developing good judgement also comes from asking God to renew our minds and by not following the wisdom of the world. Romans 12:2 says, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” The renewing of our minds is not a one-time occurrence rather it is a daily process.
As we engage in the process of renewing our minds and seeking a personal and intimate knowledge of the Holy One through the Word, we will develop the wisdom and judgement that shows us the way to walk each day!
