Prayer is a powerful weapon that we can yield against the enemy. As we humble ourselves before God (James 4:10) and approach his throne with confidence (Hebrews 4:16) we can be assured that God hears our prayers, lifts us up, and gives us the faith to stand strong in whatever situation we are facing. Prayer not only changes things, it changes us as we draw near to our Heavenly Father to sit in His presence and receive mercy, wisdom, and grace through the power of the Holy Spirit inviting us to come and receive.
When you’re speaking to God, you don’t need any set format. You could be sitting at work, driving to the grocery store, or working on a project and God will lay someone or something on your heart to pray for. This prompting is God’s holy invitation to partner with Him in prayer. What may only seem like a fleeting thought may be God asking you to intercede in prayer for change to take place. First Thessalonians 5:17 tells us, “Pray without ceasing.” This is the kind of prayer that is woven into the daily fabric of our lives at any moment of the day.
You can talk to the Lord, sing, cry, and argue with the Lord. I think He would prefer you to be angry and share that with Him rather than not to speak to Him at all. Think of your own children—when they don’t speak to you, that’s when you get concerned. So speak to God about all your needs, cares, desires, dreams, and concerns and you’ll be surprised how God answers.
Our God is the God who can change the wind (Exodus 10:19), bring the rain (Psalm 148:8), calm the seas (Matt 8:26-27) and ignite the fire (1 Kings 18:38) to bring about His will and purposes for God’s people. Remember, however, that prayer is not a proverbial grocery list that you take to God; He wants you to be His friend. He’ll talk back to you, not necessarily audibly, but in your heart and through nature, through godly people, or circumstances.
When you go out today, speak to Him. Tell Him about your joys, expectations, anxieties, and fears, and you’ll feel a lot better reminded that the Lord of the universe is looking out for you!
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.”
