Food insecurity refers to the availability of food and one’s access to it. A household is considered food insecure when its occupants live in hunger or fear of starvation.
Hunger and poverty often go hand in hand, but poverty is not the ultimate determinant of food insecurity. People living above the poverty line are often at risk of hunger as well. Research demonstrates that unemployment, rather than poverty, is a better predictor of food insecurity among people living in the United States. Food insecure households are not necessarily food insecure all the time. Many households need to make decisions on a month by month basis between important basic needs such as housing and medical bills, or purchasing nutritionally adequate foods. Check out this interactive map to find how it effects you and your neighbors. This winter, we have an opportunity to volunteer locally and help provide basic needs, including food, to area families by participating in the Giving Tree program and the Ecumenical Food Pantry. More information on how you can help will be available this Sunday, November 23rd, at our 10:00 a.m. Worship Service! If someone you know needs local food assistance please contact: Ecumencial Food Pantry St. Mary's Church Rectory 415 N. Sixth St St. Clair, MI 48079 Phone: (810) 329-2255
